The Elephant and Castle

One day an elephant boarded a bus,
The conductor was startled and shocked.
He then dropped his satchel and ran to the front,
And then on the window he knocked.

The driver opened the partition and said,
‘Here now, Len, what’s the fuss?’
The conductor replied in a voice full of panic,
‘An elephant’s got on our bus!’

‘Oh’ said the driver, ‘that is a tad awkward,
But I think I know what to do.
We’ll go out of service and make a diversion,
And call in at Chessington Zoo.’

Back at the depot, many hours later,
The inspector his temper had flared.
But not too long later the bus arrived back,
But the inspector just stood there and stared.

‘Do my eyes deceive me, or can it be true,
Not only are you quite late,
But an elephant is sat on the back of your bus,
With a cola and chips on a plate?!’

‘Oh yes,’ said the driver, ‘he’s had a great time,
And never a problem or hassle;
After spending the morning at Chessington Zoo,
We went off to see Windsor Castle.’
